Dr. Sanjiv Narayan - Next-Generation Rhythm Disorder Treatments

Sanjiv M. Narayan, MD, PhD, has been a professor at Stanford University since 2014. He has extensive research experience related to ventricular arrhythmias and artificial intelligence (AI). An experienced cardiologist, he has researched and published extensively on machine learning in health care and is seeking ways to improve treatment for patients with heart rhythm disorders. At Stanford, Dr. Sanjiv M. Narayan explores the intersections of bioengineering and traditional medicine in targeting complex heart rhythm disorders.

Dr. Narayan’s breakthrough approaches as a cardiologist informed the mapping of atrial fibrillation by analyzing recordings from a basket-type catheter than spanned most of the atrium, analyzed by AI-based algorithms to guide ablation. This approach has inspired several start-up companies, including mostly recently Ablacon (now Cortex Inc) that used this same basket and AI-based algorithms, that was funded in a 2019 financing round led by Ajax Health then acquired in 2024 by Boston Scientific.

Over the years, Sanjiv M. Narayan, MD, PhD, has attained substantial grant funding through the National Institutes of Health while delivering outstanding clinical care. From 2001 to 2014, he co-directed the electrophysiology program with the University of California, San Diego, and the Veteran Affairs Medical Center in San Diego. Dr. Narayan is currently co-Director of the Arrhythmia Center at Stanford, and is Director of the NIH funded T32 Program in Computational Medicine in the Heart (CHIP).
